BARRING any major hitch, Davis Cupper Patrick John Tierro is set to make history as the first Filipino to compete in the Prestigious Bundesliga, also known as the German National Interclub Championships.

Known for his all-around court sense, Tierro is presently campaigning in tough European tournaments, particularly in Germany.

Out four events Tierro has entered, the pride of the Subic Bay International Tennis Center has reached the semi-finals twice after going through the qualifying rounds.

Players with ATP rankings and former world-ranked players saw action in those events. Managed by Virgilio "Beeyong" Sison of Subic Bay Sports Management, Inc. Tierro's trip is sponsored by sportsman Jean Henri Lhuillier of Cebuana Lhuillier.

Sison, who also thanked SBMA chair Felicito "Tong" Payumo for his support, said that five German clubs are offering Tierro contracts for the Bundesliga. This includes travel expenses plus incentives.

"The experience against world-class foes will certainly benefit PJ as he prepares to compete in the SEA Games next year," said Sison.

Acording to Sison and Lhuillier, the overseas stint is a great opportunity for the 6-foot-1 Tierro to make his base in Europe and at the same time sustain himself financially while exposing himself to the European brand of tennis. Sison and Lhuillier expect Tierro to make an impact on the ATP tour in two to three years.

"PJ needs to play as many matches as he could on the European clay courts for him to develop a solid all-around game," noted Sison, who lived in Europe for 17 years and is extending his vast connections and expertise to talents like Tierro.

"If this is the kind of program structure we can sustain in the next few years, there is no telling what Philippine tennis can achieve in the future," added Lhuillier, who also funded PJ's trip last year to the Pat Cash Tennis Academy in Australia and the US . Tierro competed in the Ludwigshafen-Tournier (July 15-18); Michaelsberg-Tournier (July 28-Aug.1); WTB-Circuit Den RotoFilderpokal Tournier (Aug.4-8); and SWN-Cup Tourmier (Aug.11-15).
