Subic Bay Freeport Zone-Yannick Guba upset no.5 seed veteran Davis Cupper Adelo
Abadia 6-4 7-5 in the 1st day of the Subic Bay Invitational presented by Cebuana
Lhuillier and LeSoleil de Boracay Hotel at the Subic Bay International Tennis
Center.
Guba, a LaSalle University scholar-athlete who spent his summer training in
Subic Bay, came back to win both sets after trailing 1-4 in the 1st and 3-5 in
the 2nd witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd seeing tennis at its best under a
beautiful evening setting.
I was inspired to play in this venue and lucky to win this match against Adelo.
Somehow he changed his game plan during his lead. It gave me an opportunity to
get back in the match? said the former RP junior champion Guba.
In another shocker, Nico Riego De Dios, who is also a product of Subic Bay's
Cebuana Lhuillier tennis program, overcame no.7 seed Alex Lazaro 1-6 6-3 6-1.
De
Dios was forced to attack the net more in the 2nd set when Lazaro dominated the
match with solid baseline play until the 7th game when De Dios broke serve with
a volley winner.
In other matches, RP Junior Davis Cuppers Pablo Olivarez II and Ralph Barte
almost contributed to a Tsunami of upsets?in this Sea Games preparatory event,
also supported by PHILTA, Dunlop-Slazenger and SBMA, when both lost in 3 sets to
no.4 Chiemil Mantua, 4-6 6-2 6-4 and No.6 Elbert Anasta 3-6 7-6 6-3 respectively
15-year old Olivarez, who was a recent finalist in the PHINMA ITF Juniors, had
4-3 lead and break points in the 3rd set against the gritty no.4 seed while
16-year old Barte had a match point in the 2nd set tie-break.
No.1 seed PJ Tierro and No.2 Johnny Arcilla also advanced to the quarter-finals
as expected but not without oohs and ahhs from the tennis crowd as both Davis
Cup teammates unleashed their powerful games against their respective opponents.
Tierro bested bay area club mate 16-year old Leyan Moncera 6-0 6-0 while Arcilla
up-ended Rocky Pagalunan 6-2 6-2.
Age-less veteran and no.8 seed Jesse Lapore also advanced to the quarters with a
masterful win over 19-year old Lorenzo Sison 6-0 6-0. No.3 seed Rolando Ruel
beat qualifier Ryan Daza of Subic Brent, 6-2 6-0.
These are the best matches I have seen assembled in recent years where our next
generation is showing great results? said Beeyong Sison, the tournament
director. I am also equally impressed by the support of our current veteran
players for encouraging their younger players by practicing with them before and
after the matches.
This is exactly what this event is for, to bring tennis to a higher
interactive
level between our athletes and their communities which is in line with our
sports development goals? added RP Team Manager and sponsor Jean Henri
Lhuillier, who has continued to support RP tennis the past 5 years.
