NEW DELHI: After losing a heartbreaking three-set quarter-final 3 rd -leg match last week to Italy's Federico Torresi, RP No.1 tennis player Patrick John Tierro of Subic Bay unleashed his frustration on Vijay Kannan, demolishing the ATP ranked no. 478 from India 6-1 6-3 in the 1 st Round of the Masters event of the International Tennis Federation/Association Tennis Professional (ITF/ATP) Satellite tennis circuit here.
The 20-year-old Tierro sponsored by Cebuana Lhuillier sportsman Jean Henri Lhuillier and supported by PHILTA had shown the talent and aggression by winning the match without losing a service game. Capitalizing on his powerful serves and forehand drives, the 6-foot-1 Tierro who is the lowest ATP ranked player at No.1173 to qualify for the Masters, attacked the net at every opportunity to take the first set 6-1 in 25 minutes.
“I was on a zone today. I served really well. I also hit several backhand passing shots at break points during his serve which got my confidence going in the first set, “ said Tierro a protege of former ATP tour player Beeyong Sison at the Subic Bay International Tennis Center .
In the 2nd set, the 25-year old and former National Champion Kannan attacked the net more frequently to level at 3-all until Tierro broke serve with a steep cross-court backhand winner. That's all that was needed as PJ held on to win the 2 nd set and the match to set-up a round of 16 match tomorrow against no.7 seed and ATP no. 813 Hyun-Woo Nam of South Korea.
Meanwhile, no.1 seed Herbert Wiltschnig of Austria , winner of the first two legs has already won the honors by putting himself in an unbeatable position with 62 circuit points and assured himself of 43 ATP points including eight bonus points. Based on the circuit point standings, Tierro has now accumulated at least 14 circuit points which is good for 5 ATP points but is set to accumulate more if he wins more matches or the event despite going down the 1st leg due to food poisoning.
