Team Philippines beats Team New Zealand on the second-round of the Davis Cup Asia/Ocenia Zone Group II held at the Parnell Tennis Club in Auckland last April 6-8.
The latest win came on the last day when John Patrick Tierro beats Matt Simpson in three sets; 6-3. 2-6, 6-2.
In the doubles division during Day 2, the duo of Cecil Mamiit and Eric Taino edged out Dan King-Turner and Simon Rea; 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
On first day of competition, Cecil Mamiit swept Rubin Statham; 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. and Eric Taino dominates Simon Rea 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4.
Philippine’s only loss came in the match between Johnny Arcilla and Rubin Statham. Arcilla bowed to Statham in two straight sets; 6-2, 6-4.
Team Philippines now moves on to the third round where they would face Team Kuwait on September 21-23.
As of February 12, 2007, Team Philippine currently ranks Top 61 out of 135 nations who participated in this year’s tournament. Philippines improved from its previous rank of 69.
The Davis’ Cup is a prestigious 105-year old international Tennis Tournament and is considered the largest annual international team competition in world sport.
