MANILA - A new set of promising tennis players coming from the Subic Bay International Tennis Center programs have made their presence felt in the recent Andrada Cup Age-Group national tennis championships.
13-year-old Reggie Santiago, a high school student in St. Joseph College in the Subic Bay area won the 18-under Girls division by outlasting Trudy Amoranto 4-6 7-5 7-5 in the finals held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
In the Boys’ 12-under category, top seed Jacob Lagman, a Grade 5 student at the St. Benedict Childhood Education Centre bested Subic training partner No. 5 Jurence Mendoza, 6-4, 6-0, for his fifth straight title. Mendoza, the multi-gold medalist in the recent Milo-Nestle sponsored trip in Malaysia, recently moved up from the 10-under class which he dominated in 2006
Together with schoolmate and semi-finalist Mary Grace Rivero, Santiago not only have made vast improvements in their game in recent months but are both also proficient in their academic field pre-requisites – a proven development philosophy by the Subic program of bringing concrete results being applied to their daily lives.
Meanwhile, 13-year old big-serving lefty Roman Floreza who is diligently working on his all-around game, is also poised to make his move towards the footsteps of world-ranked player and SEA Games Gold-Medalist Patrick John Tierro, and Nico Riego De Dios. Nico was recently awarded a full-scholarship athletic and academic grant by the University of Eastern Washington in the United States, a Division I school.
The Subic group plans on traveling to the United States this year to compete in the United States Tennis Association junior tennis circuit in line with the program headed by Beeyong Sison
